Reception Newsletter 8th March

Dear Parents,

We hope you have all recovered from our few snow days. The children were certainly excited to tell us what they’d been up to. We have had a busy last 2 weeks beginning our ‘Superhero’ topic and can’t wait for you to join us soon to be a part of the experience too.

Parent Involvement

We will be holding Parent Involvement morning on Monday 19th March from drop-off time until 11:30am. Our theme is Superheroes and so we invite all parents and children to dress up as a real life or fictional superhero. We hope to be able to use our playground, but will have the hall as a back-up if not. We will be sending out a form with a reply slip so please let us know if you (or another grown up your child can work with) are attending or cannot make it.

The children have been discussing different and exciting superpowers. Last week they created a ‘Superkid’ and wrote about his or her powers. This week we have enjoyed learning the story of ‘Supertato’ and creating our own ‘Super Veg’. Next week we will know the story map so well that we will be able to write down our favourite part (if not more!).

Last week we were focusing on addition and solved problems with counting objects to reach a total. This week we moved onto subtraction, squashing our playdough ‘peas’ to take away from larger numbers. Next week we will be exploring repeating patterns and creating our own in a variety of ways.

We have been working on some Phase 4 tricky words (‘said’, ‘have’ and next week ‘so and ‘like’) as well as consonant cluster words (e.g. ‘tent’ and ‘drum’). Please ensure you are reinforcing this learning by reading regularly with your child at home.

Reading Challenge Books

Thank you for your support and enthusiasm already with sharing these books with your children. Please make sure you fill in the sheet in the back of your child’s reading record to let us know when you shared the book and who it was that read it. Otherwise it will not be changed. We have checked for certificate achievements and will be giving the first batch out soon!

Upcoming dates to remember:

Monday 12th March – Science Fair visit

Monday 19th March – Parent Involvement Morning 9-11:30am

Wednesday 28th March – Break up from school (3:15pm)

Things you could try at home this week:

  • Make some green playdough/red jelly to recreate our ‘Supertato’ story
  • Play teen number bingo or snap
  • Ask your child to retell the ‘Supertato’ story to you

Have a fantastic weekend.
